Neweys Transfer To Aston Martin Due To Be Made Official

After strong suspicions linking design great Adrian Newey with Aston Martin, confirmation is now considered to be imminent

Adrian Newey’s transfer to the Aston Martin Formula 1 team is expected to be confirmed in the build-up to next week’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Following months of speculation over the future of the iconic F1 designer, who indicated earlier this year that he would be departing Red Bull, formal confirmation of his plans is expected to emerge before the next race.

While Newey was first associated most closely with the Ferrari squad in the aftermath of his Red Bull leave, it immediately became evident that Aston Martin had overtaken it as a top bidder to obtain his services.

As well as team owner Lawrence Stroll doing some personal bidding to convince Newey to come onboard, a covert visit to Aston Martin’s Silverstone facility in June is said to have played a big influence in his decision to think that the club can provide him what he needs.

Stroll has spent massively in establishing a state-of-the-art facility for the squad, and importantly a new wind tunnel is set to be up and running shortly, which will aid in the team's long-term aspirations.

While Aston Martin has not commented on the matter, a statement on Newey’s future had long been anticipated for this month — due of a clause in his Red Bull leave agreement dictating when his future may be announced.

sources stated that a September date had been established for when he would be able to go public with what he was doing – which then would leave a six-month gap before he could formally start work.

The probable forthcoming announcement of Newey’s presence comes amid a big recruiting effort by Aston Martin to get the top engineering expertise the squad feels is needed to take on the best in F1.

Before the summer break, the firm revealed that former Mercedes engine executive Andy Cowell would be joining it as Group CEO in October, succeeding Martin Whitmarsh.

Furthermore, Aston has engaged former Ferrari chassis technical director Enrico Cardile to assist enhance its design skills.

With the team already having a technical director in place in Dan Fallows, who used to work with Newey at Red Bull, there have been questions expressed about how simple it would be to construct a coherent structure that integrated all its great talent.

But speaking at the last Dutch Grand Prix, Aston Martin team chief Mike Krack indicated it would not be a large challenge to address. You may also read this: Mercedes Back-to-back F1 Wins

“I think Formula 1 these days is so broad,” he stated. “It is not like you have to make huge changes.

“I think there was a time where there was a team that had seven technical directors in the past, so I think we are very far from that. I think someone like that, you have to make any type of effort to integrate and change your structure to get the best out of it.”

While Newey’s expected arrival at Aston Martin would be a significant benefit to the team's long-term objectives, with the Briton having won titles at Williams, McLaren and Red Bull, current driver Fernando Alonso feels it will take time for his effect to be noticed.

Asked at the Italian Grand Prix about the approaching confirmation, Alonso said: “Well, still only rumours. And I think it's not simply a one-man task to solve the things.

“So it's more what we have now and what we are producing; understand what is going in the right direction, what is going on the wrong direction and try to prepare 2025 in a better way.”
