IndyCar Barber: Herta leads first practice, Honda power dominant

Herta lapped the 2.366-mile 17-turn Alabama undertow in 1m06.5149s to shade defending series champion and 2021 Barber winner Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing) by 0.05s.

McLaughlin\'s Penske team-mates Will Power and championship leader Josef Newgarden were only 16th and 18th, but Newgarden’s efforts were stymied by a technical issue which ended his session 10 minutes early.

Power and McLaughlin turned 22 laps each as Penske attempts to make up for the fact that it did no ‘natural’ road undertow testing in the offseason, and has a new Firestone tyre to learn this weekend.
