Mid-ohio: Sowery Is Set For Indycar Debut

At the next round at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, a race winner and veteran of the Indy NXT is scheduled to make his debut in the IndyCar Series.

Toby Sowery's debut in the IndyCar Series is scheduled for July 5–7 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, according to Dale Coyne Racing.

The Honda-powered No. 51 entry for DCR, which is also affiliated with Rick Ware Racing, will be driven by the 27-year-old British driver.

In addition to racing with CrowdStrike Racing by APR in the LMP2 class of the IMSA SportsCar Championship, Sowery also tested with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing at Sebring International Raceway last year, where he had his first taste of IndyCar equipment. In addition, he is a competitor for Century Motorsport in the GT World Challenge.

"Racing in the NTT IndyCar Series is an exciting challenge for anyone and I’m extremely fortunate to be given this opportunity by Dale (Coyne, team owner)," Sowery stated.

"This event adds to an already wonderful season for me, which includes two incredible programs: the Fanatec GT World Challenge and the IMSA.

"Dale Coyne has been essential to IndyCar by providing drivers with chances to demonstrate their abilities, and I am excited for this challenge." Considering that I just drove the car for one day more than a year ago, I know it will be challenging, but I'm game!"

Sowery's history is primarily in single seater racing, however he did race LMP2s in the Asian Le Mans Series this past year.

With one victory and seven podium finishes in his maiden full-time season (2019), Sowery finished third. He has 35 experience points from 2019 to 23. After the coronavirus epidemic put the series on hold in 2020, he made a brief comeback to it in 2021 and finished on the podium three times.

Following his victory in the first-ever Radical World Finals in 2022, Sowery competed in three races in the IndyCar developmental series in 2023, finishing on the podium at Barber Motorsports Park.

In addition, Sowery's early career saw him place third in the British F3 championship in 2016 after racking up five victories, ten podiums, and two pole positions from 23 races. In addition, he took home the MRF Series Championship (2014–15) and the MSV Formula 3 Cup Championship (2014).

The 2.258-mile, 13-turn natural terrain road track will serve as Sowery's first IndyCar start. The hybrid unit, which is scheduled to operate for the balance of the season, will make its racing debut. Sowery is a two-time BRDC McLaren Autosport Finalist (2015) and (2016).

Coyne remarked, "I've been following Toby's career for quite some time."

"He has a successful track record to back up his ability to swiftly adjust to whichever car he is driving. We are aware that there may be a high learning curve for him given that he hasn't tested the hybrid version of the vehicle before the Mid-Ohio race this weekend, but we are certain he will pick things up fast and are excited to see what he can do.
